Mezzanines by Design – Applications of Mezzanine Storage Systems

Mezzanine storage systems are useful tools that are often used in warehouses, facility centers, and building structures to store various kinds of products and items. They can be pre-fabricated or custom-made according to the needs of the user.

For more information about these warehouse systems, consult with the experts at Mezzanines By Design or visit their website here.

Mezzanines by Design – Catwalk Mezzanine Safety

Catwalk systems are walkways or aisles designed to enable warehouse workers to pull merchandise from all types rack and shelving. Also known as catwalk mezzanines or maintenance catwalks, they are also used for viewing operations.

While catwalk systems are normally installed stably and sturdily, it is still best to observe proper safety measures to ensure safety and avoid accidents.

Safety regulation compliance is becoming increasingly important in maintenance facilities across the United States. The growing number of accidents in warehouse and facility centers can be bothersome to many warehouse owners. Below are some safety tips in using industrial maintenance platforms.

Dos in Using Industrial Maintenance Platforms

  • Undertake the daily checks recommended in the material handbook prior to operation of the machine.
  • Ensure that all instructions, safe working load, and warning decals are clean and legible.
  • Make sure that the platform does not come into contact with fixed objects, such as buildings, or moving objects, including vehicles, other plant equipment, and the likes.
  • Always replace any removable guard rails, including close and lock access gate, to enable full edge protection to be maintained.
  • Ensure that the load is evenly distributed within the platform.
  • Ensure the safety of persons that may enter the area around the platform. If necessary, cordon off areas to prevent persons entering the danger area.
  • Make sure that hands are kept within the confines of the handrail when operating the machine.
  • Always ensure that the area below the platform is clear of obstruction before lowering.

Don’ts in Using Industrial Maintenance Platforms

  • Do not exceed the rated capacity or the safe working load of the platform.
  • Do not make any attempt to increase the working height or outreach of the platform, including using of stepladders in the platform.
  • Do not enter or exit the platform unless the platform is in the lowered and transport position.
  • Do not apply external side loads to the platform or scissor structure.
  • Do not allow persons at ground level to operate the controls while the platform is occupied, unless in an emergency situation.

These are some safety guidelines that every warehouse worker should keep in mind to avoid accidents. For more information about industrial maintenance platforms and how to properly install and/or use them, consult us!

Building Environment-Friendly Mezzanine Systems

photo from: aw-systems.com

In today’s world, nearly everyone is concerned about making business decisions that are environmentally responsible. This kind of thinking should also be considered when choosing a decking surface for an elevated platform, such as mezzanine systems.

When choosing the deck surface material for an elevated structure such as an industrial mezzanine or equipment platform the popular choices of materials to use for these applications include concrete and engineered wood products.

Concrete vs. Engineered Wood Products

Many contractors realize that engineered wood products are more economical and ergonomically friendlier than concrete. However, a recent study concluded that using engineered wood products instead of concrete decking on a 50,000 square foot industrial mezzanine was an excellent choice for the environment as well. In fact, using ResinDek mezzanine panels instead of concrete is equivalent to removing 56 vehicles from the road for a period of one year.

Concrete is widely accepted and commonly used by most general contractors when building elevated structures during the time of new construction. There are many reasons why concrete is preferred, but one may be that concrete is the building material that general contractors are the most familiar with and it is already being used extensively on the jobsite. In addition, concrete is non-combustible, permanent, and waterproof.

The Importance of Using Green Materials

With today’s modernization and industrialization, the air, water, and land have continuously accumulating pollution that gradually destroys the environment. In order to slow this down, it is important that manufacturers and general contractors should start thinking about using greener alternatives for the materials they are using in building structures, architectures, and warehouse materials, and elevated platforms. This movement when started now and consistently observed can significantly change the future.

Safety Measures in Using Mezzanine Platforms

photo from: ssi-schaefer.ph

Mezzanine platforms are useful warehouse tools that provide extra storage space. However, when not used and maintain properly, they may cause more harm than bring additional help. It is, therefore, important to observe safety measures when using your mezzanine platform in the warehouse or facility centers.

Here are some safety measures that warehouse workers need to keep in mind and observe to prevent danger and accidents from happening.

  1. As much as possible, have the manufacturer of your mezzanine platform install it in your warehouse. They know their product well, so it is best to let them handle the installation work. However, if your team has to do it, make sure to carefully read the installation manual first before doing the actual set up.
  1. Identify the weight capacity of your mezzanine platform and religiously follow it when storing products and equipment. Make sure that you don’t exceed its weight limit to keep it functional for a long time.
  1. Use anti-slip mats, hand rails, and other safety features with your mezzanine for added security and safety. These mezzanine accessories will prevent workers from slipping, stumbling, or falling while on the platform.
  1. Make sure that only authorized personnel have access to the mezzanine platform. Not only will it serve as a control measure for product inventory and access, but is also a safety measure that will prevent from unauthorized workers from getting into troubles.
  1. Regularly check and monitor the condition of your mezzanine platform and confirm that it is still functional at all times. Otherwise, if you see any damage or loose nut or bolt, have it fixed right away to avoid further damage or accidents. Contact your mezzanine manufacturer and have them solve the problem immediately.

These are just some safety guidelines that you and your co-workers need to keep in mind when using the mezzanine to ensure a safe working environment. To learn more about mezzanine platforms and how they can be of help for your material handling needs, consult us!

Fixed Access Ladders for Equipment Platforms

Ladders are safety tools to get to an elevated point from the ground. They can be classified as portable, fixed, straight, and stepladders.

Fixed access ladders are widely used as means of access to and egress from an equipment platform, tower cranes, overhead structures in construction works, water tanks in buildings, lift machine rooms, shafts, and other structures. For fixed access ladders reaching a height of 3 metres or more, the following safety measures should be noted and observed.

  1. Ensure that there is sufficient space behind the steps to provide a proper footing.
  1. Employers should properly instruct workers of the hazards in the workplace as well as the relevant safety measures needed.
  1. Ladder users should read and follow the information and instruction provided by the manufacturer.
  1. Suitable safety hoops should be installed for additional safety and to serve as hand rails when accessing the ladder.
  1. The spacing of the safety hoops should not exceed one metre.
  1. The lowest safety hoop should be installed at a height not exceeding three meters above the ground, while the highest safety hoop should be installed one metre above the upper end of access and egress.
  1. Especially when used in an equipment platform, the hoop should be connected to the guard-rail of the platform.
  1. There should be a suitable landing place or rest platform at an interval of not greater than nine metres along the fixed access ladder. The landing place or rest platform should be fitted with suitable guard-rails of adequate strength. The height of the top guard-rail should be between 900 and 1,150 mm while the height of the intermediate guard-rail should be between 450 and 600 mm. The toe-board installed should be of at least 200 mm high.

While ladders are tools for easy access to elevated platforms, they can bring harm and accident when not used or installed properly. Hence, proper safety measures should always be observed. For more information, visit us!
